Diameter

The standard hex headed Tapcon comes in diameters of 3/16” and 1/4”.  These designated diameters do not equal either the outside diameter or inside diameter but are approximately equal to the mean diameter. This allows for a simpler, easier to understand product description. The approximately measured diameters are as follows:

Length

The length of all hex head Tapcon screws are measured from underneath the head. They are measured this way because the hex head sits above the surface of the material being fastened and is not used to compute the length of screw required for any specific application.  A table showing the different lengths for each diameter is found below:

Threads

Each tapcon is manufactured with only a portion of the shank threaded. The length of threads on each tapcon is 1-5/8”, with the exception of the 1-1/4” which has threads that are 1-1/8”. The thread length is designed to be equal to the maximum embedment in the base material. The threads are called double lead HI-Lo threads with 11 threads per inch on the 3/16” diameter and 15 threads per inch on the 1/4”.

Head Diameter

Measured from flat to flat on the hex head, the 3/16” diameter measures 1/4” and the 1/4” measures 5/16”. The diameter of the attached washer is .355” for the 3/16” diameter and .415” for the 1/4”.

Head Height

The height of the 3/16” diameter tapcons head is .140” and the 1/4” is .180”.

Driver Size

The size of the driver used for the hex washer headed Tapcon screw is equal to the diameter of the hex as measured from flat to flat.  The 3/16” diameter tapcon requires a 1/4” driver and the 1/4” tapcon requires a 5/16” driver.

Material

The tapcon is manufactured out of a low carbon steel SAE1022.

Coating

All hex headed Tapcon concrete screws are coated with a special coating called Climaseal™ that is blue in color and helps prevent rusting.
